Insights on In-Situ Photochemistry Associated with Ozone Reduction in Guangzhou during the COVID-19 Lockdown

چکیده
Increases in ground-level ozone (O3) have been observed during the COVID-19 lockdown many places around world, primarily due to uncoordinated emission reductions of O3 precursors. In Guangzhou, capital Guangdong province South China, distinctively decreased lockdown. Such a phenomenon was attributed meteorological variations and weakening local formation, as indicated by chemical transport models. However, emission-based modellings were not fully validated observations, especially for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). this study, we analyzed changes its precursors, including VOCs, from pre-lockdown (Pre-LD) period (LD) spanning 1 week Guangzhou. An observation-based box model applied understand evolution in-situ photochemistry. Indeed, ambient concentrations precursors significantly LD. A reduction 20.7% identified total mixing ratios transportation-related species experienced biggest declines. would lead decrease production if meteorology did change between Pre-LD LD periods. Sensitivity tests that formation limited VOCs both The lower temperature photolysis frequencies reversed increase be caused otherwise. This study reiterates fact abatement requires coordinated control strategies, even emissions can reduced short term.
